There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling hall wagering is illegal. Eight casinos are established in a relatively small location in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent spot, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income acquired from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; still, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and even though visas are apparently necessary to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is accurate of most borders.
The first Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship gambling hall, highlights 150 slot machines and sixty tables. The Naga gambling den is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are 150 slot machine games and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machines and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and 66 of the familiar gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight casinos in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational resort and hotel building that highlights a number of luxuries accompanying the gambling den, which offers 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machines and 88 gaming tables.
