There is an appealing history to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just over the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where gambling hall wagering is banned. Eight casinos are established in a relatively tiny space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent location, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income accrued from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of controls constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; however, financial sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 1700, and despite the fact visas are apparently needed to pass, there are methods around this, as is real of many border crossings.
The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored bateau casino, contains 150 slots and 60 gaming tables. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slots and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred one armed bandits and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and sixty six of the common gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel building that features numerous conveniences aside from the casino, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight tables.
